If you’re preparing to work from home, the following step-by-step instructions will help your transition be as smooth as can be.

Before we get started, you’ll need to determine whether or not you have a network dongle/licence.

If you have a silver dongle connected to your PC, it’s highly likely you don’t have a network licence, but it’s not out of the question. Start by checking your colleagues’ PCs:

  • If everyone else has a silver dongle, your dongle will not be a network dongle.
  • If your silver dongle is the only office dongle (i.e. no one else has one), it is a network dongle.

Instructions for a non-network dongle/licence

Before you take your PC home, consider the following:

  • Is your software reading setting from a network location?
  • Are your textures stored locally or on the network?
  • Are your job files on the network or on your local PC?
  • Do you have access to your network from home?
  • Do you have TeamViewer access to a PC at work to get files that you might need?

If you have settings that are shared on the network, you’ll need a Pytha Partners techie to connect to your PC and transfer these settings locally. If you take your PC home before doing this, we won’t be able to help you.

Do you have a VPN server?

A VPN network allows you to log into your office network and work from home as if you are in the office. The dongle will remain in the office, but you can take your PC home and continue working.

Before you take your PC home, consider the following:

  • Is your software reading setting from a network location? Even with a VPN network, it may be that your PC will not find the network location. If this is the case, it will be best to transfer these settings locally for the interim. All other files and folders should be available from your network.
  • Do you have a VPN router? If you do, you’ll need to get your IT company to communicate with us before you take your PC home. We’ll work with your IT team to ensure your transition to home is seamless.

Don’t have a VPN?

Pytha Partners have set up a dedicated VPN server to accommodate those who have network dongles but no VPN. To minimise the amount of traffic to our VPN, we will only be granting access to customers who have a network licence. If you have a stand-alone dongle, you will need to use this. (Note: due to costs and limited stock, we will be unable to split network dongles into individual dongles.)

For example, if you have a 3 User network licence, one person will be able to take this licence home. The remaining two users will need to gain access to our VPN. They’ll need an internet connection at home, and we’ll provide specific instructions about how to access our VPN in order to connect to our PYTHA licence. (Note: contact support@pythapartners.com.au for these instructions, or find them in your portal if you have a TSA contract.)

What can you do to be prepared?

  • Make sure you understand your setup. Should you be required to work from home, make sure you know what you need to take with you. You’ll need a PC, screen, mouse and – most importantly – a dongle.
  • Think of your dongle as the valuable item it is, and ensure it’s well protected. Make sure your boss has insured the dongle for loss or theft.
  • As set out above, we won’t be able to help you access files stuck on a network if you’re already at home. We need to make sure you’re set up correctly before you take your PC out of the office. When you’re at home, you’ll need TeamViewer to allow a remote connection to PCs left at work. Make sure this is installed, and seek assistance from your IT consultant if necessary (we can’t help you with this – it’s out of our scope).
  • You may be sharing processing software such as Enroute. We suggest that you focus on preparing PYTHA drawings, cutting lists and plot sheets while working from home, and leave nesting processes for your return. If you must do this to keep a CNC machine running, dedicate one staff member only to be in charge of this process.

What if taking the office PC home is not an option?

Your work PC has met all specification requirements and is set up expressly to run PYTHA 3D CAD. Using your home computer should be a ‘last resort’ scenario. We may be able to help you set up the software on your home PC, but there is no guarantee and we have the following restrictions:

  • We will only install Pytha V24 or Pytha V23 (no earlier versions) on home PCs.
  • We will not be able to install Analyzer, Enroute or machine software applications on your home PC.
  • We will only install Pytha on a home PC during regular business hours.
  • You will need TeamViewer installed on the PC before we can connect.
  • Any settings from your office PC will need to be copied and available upon installation.
  • There will be a cost associated with installing Pytha on a home PC. Enquire about this cost prior to booking in an installation.
  • You will need to schedule the install; we’ll do this at our first available time slot.
  • You will get temporary access only and the duration will be determined by instructions based on federal and state governments. This is a temporary measure for those forced home by the Coronavirus; it’s not a long term option.

What’s it going to cost?

Customers on support contracts will not incur additional charges (unless you’re installing software on a home PC).

Customers without an existing support contract will be provided with a quotation for transition requirements. These are unprecedented times, and we’re all doing the best that we can. We can assure you that we’ll keep our times efficient and your costs minimised. Contact us sooner rather than later so we can establish the best plan of attack and an accurate quotation.

Worried that you won’t have enough work to draw at home?

PYTHA HQ is well aware of the economic challenges facing those in our industry. They’ve put some great price incentives on the table to help customers upgrade their current software. Combined with Australian Government incentives to purchase capital (learn more here), this could turn out to be an excellent time to upgrade. Any potential downtime you or your staff may have could be well spent learning the features of V24, and we’ll certainly be on hand to offer online training opportunities.
